Moving day feels different when nobody has to ask who has the keys.
A calmer moving day starts with a plan: who handles each task, when it happens, and what changes if a date moves.
Start with access, not the truck
Write down the closing date and the possession terms for each home. Confirm access with the agents and closing teams before booking the move. A hoped-for date is not permission to enter the next house.
Make a plan for the dog, too
While doors are open and people are carrying boxes, decide who is responsible for your pet. Set aside the carrier or crate, familiar supplies and any medication you normally use. Check identification and contact information. Ask your veterinarian about care questions specific to your animal.
Keep those items accessible rather than buried in a box. The same principle applies to the coffee maker and the bedding you need that night: name the person who keeps them with you.
Give the small jobs names
- Keys and access: who confirms the handoff?
- Movers: who confirms arrival, payment and any rescheduling terms?
- Utilities and internet: who checks the start and stop dates?
- Cleaning: who books the work and confirms access?
- Children and pets: who handles the busy hours?
- Packing and storage, if needed: who books the help or space, checks access and timing, and confirms the costs?
- Address changes: who handles mail forwarding and updates the accounts that need the new address?
- School records and enrollment, if applicable: who confirms the district requirements and completes the transfer steps?
- First-night essentials: who keeps medications, documents, chargers and bedding out of the truck?
Use one shared list. Put an owner, deadline and confirmation beside each task. Include vendor costs in your budget and confirm who is responsible for paying them.
Write the backup before you need it
If a closing shifts, identify whom to call and what changes. Storage, temporary housing and overlapping ownership can still be necessary. Planning helps you see those possibilities early; it cannot guarantee they disappear.
For a Lincoln move-up, I want the sale, purchase and physical move discussed together. Bring your likely dates and your biggest moving-week concern. We can start by putting the decisions in order.
Keep the whole move in view
The Move-Up Method organizes the conversation into PLAN, PREP, SEARCH, SELL and MOVING. Start with goals, financing and timing. Make property-specific preparation decisions using quotes and clear responsibilities. Search against your verified criteria, discuss the listing strategy, and coordinate the physical move around confirmed access.
The written scope and separate provider agreements determine what is included and who pays. The framework does not replace lender approval, contract terms or a backup plan.
